CONSTRUCTABILITY

How practical, safe, and efficient a design is to actually build under real field conditions.

Across the Table: A constructability issue means the design may work on paper but creates a problem when we try to build it.

Use It — Field: “We can't install it as drawn. We don't have enough clearance to get the equipment into position.”

Use It — Management: “We've identified a constructability issue with the designed location. We need a resolution before installation can proceed.”

FIELD CONDITION

An actual condition found onsite that affects how the planned work can be performed.

Across the Table: Field conditions matter when what exists onsite doesn't match the drawings, assumptions, or information used to plan the work.

Use It — Field: “The existing conduit is right where the new cabinet is supposed to go.”

Use It — Management: “We identified an existing field condition that conflicts with the planned cabinet location.”

GREENHAND

New to the trade or inexperienced with the work being performed.

Across the Table: New or developing worker; may affect training, supervision, and expected production.

Use It — Field: “I've got two greenhands on this crew, so I'm pairing them with experienced installers.”

Use It — Management: “Two members of the crew are still developing task competency, so today's production forecast accounts for additional training and supervision.”

MEANS AND METHODS

The techniques, procedures, equipment, and sequencing used by the contractor to perform the work.

Across the Table: The drawings and specifications generally define what must be built. Means and methods describe how the contractor actually builds it.

Use It — Field: “We know where it has to end up. Now we need to figure out the safest way to get it there.”

Use It — Management: “The design requirement isn't changing. We're evaluating the means and methods needed to execute it safely.”

PRODUCTION RATE

The amount of completed work produced within a given period of time.

Across the Table: Production rate turns “we're moving pretty good” into something that can be measured, forecast, and compared against the plan.

Use It — Field: “This crew is averaging four installs a day.”

Use It — Management: “Our current production rate is four installations per day, which supports the planned completion date.”

PUNCH LIST

A documented list of incomplete, deficient, or corrective work that must be addressed before the work is considered complete.

Across the Table: A punch list isn't just leftover work. It represents outstanding completion obligations that can affect acceptance, closeout, payment, and turnover.

Use It — Field: “We've got three punch items left. We'll knock them out tomorrow.”

Use It — Management: “Three punch-list items remain before the site is ready for final acceptance.”

REDLINE

A field-marked change or correction showing how installed conditions differ from the original construction documents.

Across the Table: Redlines capture what actually changed in the field so the final project record can reflect what was built.

Use It — Field: “We moved that conduit six inches. Make sure you redline the drawing.”

Use It — Management: “The field modification has been captured on the redlines for incorporation into the as-built documentation.”

REWORK

Work that must be corrected, removed, rebuilt, or performed again because the original work did not meet the required standard or requirement.

Across the Table: Rework isn't only a quality issue. It can consume labor, material, equipment, schedule, and margin without adding new value to the project.

Use It — Field: “We installed those brackets wrong. We've got to pull them off and redo them.”

Use It — Management: “The installation requires rework. I'm evaluating the labor and schedule impact before we proceed.”

SCOPE CREEP

The gradual addition of work beyond the originally agreed scope without corresponding control of cost, schedule, or authorization.

Across the Table: Scope creep often starts with small requests that individually seem harmless. Repeated often enough, they consume resources the project never planned for.

Use It — Field: “They keep asking us to do little extras while we're here.”

Use It — Management: “We're seeing scope creep through repeated requests outside the contracted work. We need to document and control those additions.”

WORKAROUND

A temporary or alternate way of accomplishing the work when the original plan cannot be followed.

Across the Table: A workaround keeps work moving, but it shouldn't quietly become a permanent solution if approval, engineering, documentation, or corrective action is still required.

Use It — Field: “That material isn't here, so we're going to work the other side and come back to this.”

Use It — Management: “We've implemented a temporary workaround to maintain production while the material constraint is resolved.”

AS-BUILT

The final record showing how the work was actually installed, including approved changes and field modifications.

Across the Table: The original drawing shows what was planned. The as-built shows what is actually there when the project is turned over.

Use It — Field: “Before we close this out, make sure the drawing matches what we actually installed.”

Use It — Management: “The field changes have been incorporated into the as-built documentation for final turnover.”

CLOSEOUT

The process of completing the remaining work, documentation, corrections, approvals, and turnover requirements needed to formally finish a project.

Across the Table: Construction being physically finished doesn't necessarily mean the project is closed. Missing documentation, punch items, testing, approvals, or as-builts can keep a completed job from being accepted.

Use It — Field: “The install is done. Now we need to finish the punch items, pictures, and paperwork.”

Use It — Management: “Physical construction is complete, but several closeout deliverables remain before final acceptance.”

COORDINATION

Making sure people, trades, materials, equipment, information, and timing come together so the work can proceed as planned.

Across the Table: Coordination problems often look like field problems after they happen. Good coordination catches the conflict before the crew is standing there waiting.

Use It — Field: “Make sure electrical is finished before we bring the equipment crew in.”

Use It — Management: “We need to coordinate electrical completion with equipment installation so we don't create idle time or remobilization.”

DEFICIENCY

Work or a condition that does not meet the required drawing, specification, standard, or acceptance criteria.

Across the Table: Calling something a deficiency identifies a specific requirement that isn't being met. It is more useful than simply saying the work “doesn't look right.”

Use It — Field: “That support spacing doesn't meet the standard. It needs to be corrected.”

Use It — Management: “We identified a deficiency in the support spacing that must be corrected before acceptance.”

MOBILIZATION

The process of getting the people, equipment, materials, facilities, and other resources needed to begin work at a location.

Across the Table: Mobilization has a cost. Sending a crew and equipment to a site before the work is truly ready can create expense without creating production.

Use It — Field: “Don't send the crew yet. The material isn't there.”

Use It — Management: “I'm holding mobilization until material availability is confirmed so we don't create unnecessary labor and travel cost.”

NEAR MISS

An unplanned event that did not cause injury or damage but had the potential to do so.

Across the Table: A near miss is useful information. It gives us a chance to identify and correct a hazard before the same condition produces a different result.

Use It — Field: “That fitting fell but didn't hit anybody. That's a near miss. We need to figure out why it happened.”

Use It — Management: “We had a near miss involving a dropped object. We're reviewing the cause and corrective actions before work resumes.”

QUALITY ASSURANCE (QA)

The processes used to establish confidence that the work will consistently meet the required standards.

Across the Table: QA is about the system behind quality—standards, processes, training, documentation, and controls intended to prevent defects before they occur.

Use It — Field: “Let's make sure everybody is working from the same standard before we start.”

Use It — Management: “Our QA process establishes the installation standard and verification requirements before production begins.”

QUALITY CONTROL (QC)

The inspection and verification of completed or in-progress work to confirm that it meets the required standard.

Across the Table: QA helps establish how we prevent defects. QC checks whether the actual work meets the requirement.

Use It — Field: “Check the first one before we build twenty of them the same way.”

Use It — Management: “We're performing QC on the initial installation before releasing the remaining work for production.”

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION (RFI)

A formal request for clarification when the construction documents, requirements, or field conditions do not provide enough information to proceed confidently.

Across the Table: An RFI turns an unresolved field question into a documented request for direction. It creates a record of what was unclear and the response used to proceed.

Use It — Field: “The drawing doesn't show enough clearance here. We need an answer before we install it.”

Use It — Management: “We've submitted an RFI requesting clarification of the equipment clearance requirement before proceeding with installation.”

SEQUENCE OF WORK

The planned order in which activities are performed so each step supports what needs to happen next.

Across the Table: Sequence affects more than convenience. The wrong sequence can create rework, congestion, idle time, safety exposure, or schedule impact even when every individual task is performed correctly.

Use It — Field: “Finish the overhead work before we set the cabinets. Otherwise we're going to work around them all week.”

Use It — Management: “We're sequencing the overhead installation ahead of equipment placement to reduce interference and protect production.”

COMMISSIONING

The process of verifying that installed systems and equipment operate as intended and meet the project requirements before final turnover.

Across the Table: Installation answers, “Is it built?” Commissioning answers, “Does it work the way it's supposed to?”

Use It — Field: “The equipment is installed, but we're not done until it's tested and operating correctly.”

Use It — Management: “Installation is complete, and the system is moving into commissioning before final turnover.”

CREW LEAD

The person responsible for directing the day-to-day work of a crew and helping keep the work safe, productive, and on plan.

Across the Table: A crew lead is often the first level where technical ability starts becoming leadership ability. Knowing how to perform the work and knowing how to organize other people to perform it are different skills.

Use It — Field: “John's running the crew today. Questions about the work go through him.”

Use It — Management: “John is the crew lead and owns day-to-day task coordination and production for that crew.”

DELIVERABLE

A defined item, result, document, or completed piece of work that must be provided as part of the project.

Across the Table: A deliverable isn't necessarily something physically installed. Test results, photographs, reports, drawings, closeout packages, and approvals can all be required deliverables.

Use It — Field: “Don't leave the site without the required pictures and test results.”

Use It — Management: “The installation is complete, but two required closeout deliverables are still outstanding.”

DEMOBILIZATION

The planned removal of crews, equipment, temporary facilities, and other resources after their work at a location is complete.

Across the Table: Demobilization should be planned just like mobilization. Leaving too early can create an expensive return trip; staying too long continues consuming resources.

Use It — Field: “Before we pull out, make sure there's nothing left that will bring us back here.”

Use It — Management: “We're verifying completion before demobilization to avoid unnecessary remobilization costs.”

FOREMAN

The field leader responsible for directing a crew, assigning work, maintaining standards, and managing day-to-day execution.

Across the Table: A strong foreman does more than distribute tasks. The role is the connection between the plan and the people performing the work—production, quality, safety, sequencing, and communication all meet here.

Use It — Field: “The foreman is running the crew. He knows what needs to happen today and who's doing it.”

Use It — Management: “The foreman owns daily field execution and communicates production, constraints, and emerging issues to the superintendent.”

INSPECTION

A deliberate examination of work, equipment, or conditions to determine whether they meet the applicable requirements.

Across the Table: Inspection shouldn't be treated as the moment we discover whether the work was done correctly. Good field control verifies quality throughout the work so final inspection confirms the result rather than surprises us.

Use It — Field: “Check it now. Don't wait until the inspector gets here to find out it's wrong.”

Use It — Management: “We're performing internal inspections throughout installation so deficiencies are corrected before final acceptance.”

INSTALLATION STANDARD

The documented requirement that defines how work is expected to be installed and what an acceptable finished product looks like.

Across the Table: A standard removes personal preference from the conversation. The question becomes whether the installation meets the requirement, not whether someone likes the way it looks.

Use It — Field: “Don't build it the way you remember it. Check the current standard.”

Use It — Management: “The installation was reviewed against the current standard, and the identified deviations require correction.”

OUTAGE / WORK WINDOW

An approved period when work may affect, interrupt, or require controlled access to an operating system or facility.

Across the Table: A work window is not simply a start time. It is a limited operating constraint that may control staffing, sequencing, contingency planning, and how much work can safely be attempted.

Use It — Field: “We've only got from 11 tonight until 5 in the morning. Everything needs to be ready before that window starts.”

Use It — Management: “We have a six-hour approved work window, so all prerequisite work and contingency planning must be complete before the outage begins.”

SITE LOGISTICS

The planning and control of how people, materials, equipment, access, storage, deliveries, and movement are managed around a jobsite.

Across the Table: Site logistics can determine whether a good construction plan is actually executable. Where something gets delivered, stored, staged, or moved can affect safety and production just as much as the installation itself.

Use It — Field: “We can't put that material there. The crane needs that access tomorrow.”

Use It — Management: “We're adjusting the site logistics plan to maintain crane access while providing adequate material staging.”

TRADE COORDINATION

The alignment of work between different trades so one group's activities do not unnecessarily interfere with or delay another's.

Across the Table: Different trades can each be performing their own scope correctly and still create a project problem if their work isn't coordinated.

Use It — Field: “Electrical needs to finish above us before we close this ceiling.”

Use It — Management: “We need trade coordination between electrical and the ceiling contractor before that area can be released for close-in.”

BACKCHARGE

A cost charged back to another contractor, subcontractor, vendor, or responsible party for work or expense caused by their failure to meet an obligation.

Across the Table: A backcharge connects a field problem to financial responsibility. Good documentation matters because somebody eventually has to support why the cost belongs to someone else.

Use It — Field: “We had to fix their work. Get pictures and track the hours.”

Use It — Management: “We're documenting the corrective labor and material for a potential backcharge to the responsible subcontractor.”

JHA / JSA

A Job Hazard Analysis or Job Safety Analysis identifies the hazards associated with a task and the controls needed to perform the work safely.

Across the Table: The value isn't the completed form. It's the conversation and thinking that happen before the work begins.

Use It — Field: “Before we start, let's walk through the task and make sure we've covered the hazards.”

Use It — Management: “The crew completed the JHA before beginning work and identified the required controls for the task.”

LEAD / LEADMAN

An experienced worker who provides day-to-day direction or technical leadership to other crew members, often without carrying the full responsibility of a foreman.

Across the Table: A lead can extend the foreman's reach by owning a portion of the work, helping develop less-experienced workers, and keeping routine decisions close to the crew.

Use It — Field: “Mike's leading the equipment side. If you finish your task, check with him.”

Use It — Management: “I assigned an experienced lead to that workstream so the foreman can maintain oversight of the entire crew.”

NONCONFORMANCE

Work, material, or a condition that does not comply with an established requirement, specification, drawing, procedure, or standard.

Across the Table: A nonconformance identifies a failure to meet a defined requirement. Depending on the project, it may require formal documentation, corrective action, or approval before acceptance.

Use It — Field: “This doesn't meet the specified requirement. Don't cover it up until we get it resolved.”

Use It — Management: “We identified a nonconformance with the project specification and are documenting the required corrective action.”

PRODUCTIVITY

How efficiently resources are converted into completed work.

Across the Table: Production tells us how much work got done. Productivity asks what it took to produce it. Two crews can complete the same amount of work and have very different productivity.

Use It — Field: “We got the same amount done with four people today that took us six yesterday.”

Use It — Management: “Production remained constant while labor hours decreased, so crew productivity improved.”

RESOURCE ALLOCATION

Assigning available people, equipment, materials, time, or other resources where they can best support the work.

Across the Table: Field leaders do this constantly, even if they simply call it moving people around. The management language connects that decision to priorities, production, cost, and schedule.

Use It — Field: “I moved two guys to the equipment room because that work needs to finish first.”

Use It — Management: “I reallocated two installers to the equipment room to protect the higher-priority work.”

RISK ASSESSMENT

Identifying what could go wrong, considering the likelihood and potential impact, and deciding what should be done about it.

Across the Table: Field leaders assess risk every time they look ahead and question manpower, material, equipment, access, safety, weather, outages, or other conditions that could affect the work.

Use It — Field: “If that material doesn't show up tomorrow, we're going to run out of work for this crew.”

Use It — Management: “Material availability is a schedule risk. If delivery slips another day, we won't have enough executable work to maintain planned production.”

SCOPE OF WORK

The defined work, responsibilities, and requirements included in an agreement, contract, work package, or assignment.

Across the Table: Understanding the scope tells us not only what we're responsible for doing, but also where additional requests may require clarification, authorization, or a change.

Use It — Field: “Check the scope before we agree to do that. I'm not sure it's ours.”

Use It — Management: “The requested work appears to be outside our current scope. We're verifying contractual responsibility before proceeding.”

SPECIFICATION

A written project requirement defining the materials, performance, workmanship, testing, or other standards the completed work must meet.

Across the Table: Drawings generally show where and what to build. Specifications provide requirements that may not appear graphically on the drawing. Both can govern the work.

Use It — Field: “The drawing shows the location. Check the spec for the required material and installation requirements.”

Use It — Management: “We're verifying the proposed installation against both the construction drawings and project specifications.”

WORK PACKAGE

A defined portion of project work assembled with the information and requirements needed to plan, assign, execute, and track it.

Across the Table: A good work package gives the field enough information to execute without hunting for basic requirements after the crew is already mobilized.

Use It — Field: “Before we send the crew, make sure they've got the drawings, scope, material list, and site information.”

Use It — Management: “The work package is being reviewed for completeness before release to the field.”

ESCALATION

Moving an issue to the next appropriate level when it cannot be resolved with the authority, information, or resources available at the current level.

Across the Table: Escalation isn't passing off a problem. Done correctly, it gets the decision to the person who has the authority to make it.

Use It — Field: “I can't approve that change. I'm taking it to the superintendent.”

Use It — Management: “The issue requires client approval, so I've escalated it to the appropriate decision-maker.”

FORECAST

The current prediction of where the work is likely to finish based on what we know today.

Across the Table: The plan tells us what we intended to happen. The forecast tells us what we now believe will happen. Good field information is what makes a forecast useful.

Use It — Field: “At the rate we're going, we'll probably finish Thursday instead of Wednesday.”

Use It — Management: “Based on current production and the remaining work, I'm forecasting completion for Thursday.”

MITIGATION

An action taken to reduce the likelihood or impact of a known risk or problem.

Across the Table: Field leaders mitigate constantly—adding resources, changing sequence, securing backup equipment, or moving work around before a problem becomes worse.

Use It — Field: “The lift has been acting up, so I've got a backup reserved for tomorrow.”

Use It — Management: “We've mitigated the equipment risk by securing a backup lift in case the primary unit fails.”

SCHEDULE RISK

A condition or uncertainty that could cause planned work or project completion to occur later than expected.

Across the Table: Something isn't a schedule delay just because it could become one. Calling it a schedule risk tells management there is still an opportunity to prevent or reduce the impact.

Use It — Field: “If electrical isn't finished tomorrow, we're going to lose a day.”

Use It — Management: “Electrical completion is a schedule risk. If it slips beyond tomorrow, it will affect the planned installation start.”

SUPERINTENDENT

The field leader responsible for coordinating construction execution across crews, trades, priorities, schedule, safety, quality, and changing site conditions.

Across the Table: The superintendent operates between the plan and the work. The role requires understanding what is happening in the field, what happens next, and which issues need to move up or down the organization.

Use It — Field: “The superintendent is coordinating the crews and making sure we're ready for what's coming next.”

Use It — Management: “The superintendent owns field execution and communicates production, constraints, risks, and required decisions back to the project team.”

TAILGATE / TOOLBOX TALK

A short field safety discussion focused on the work, hazards, conditions, or lessons relevant to the crew.

Across the Table: The value isn't proving that a meeting occurred. The value is making sure the crew understands something that can affect how they perform the work.

Use It — Field: “Before we start, we're going to cover the lift plan and what's different about today's work.”

Use It — Management: “We're addressing the changed site condition in today's toolbox talk before work begins.”

TOLERANCE

The allowable amount of variation from a specified dimension, position, level, alignment, or other requirement.

Across the Table: Construction doesn't always require absolute dimensional perfection. Tolerance establishes how much variation is acceptable before the work becomes deficient.

Use It — Field: “It's not exactly centered, but check the tolerance before you tear it back out.”

Use It — Management: “The installed condition is being verified against the allowable project tolerance before corrective work is directed.”

WORKFLOW

The movement of work through a sequence of tasks, people, decisions, or processes from start to completion.

Across the Table: When production slows, the problem isn't always the people performing the work. Sometimes the workflow itself creates waiting, unnecessary movement, repeated handling, or poor handoffs.

Use It — Field: “We keep walking back across the site for material. Let's stage everything before we start the next one.”

Use It — Management: “We're changing the material-staging workflow to reduce nonproductive movement and improve crew productivity.”

CORRECTIVE ACTION

An action taken to correct a problem and address what caused it so the same problem is less likely to happen again.

Across the Table: Fixing the defective work handles the immediate problem. Corrective action asks what needs to change so we don't keep producing the same result.

Use It — Field: “We fixed this one. Now let's figure out why we're getting the same problem on multiple installs.”

Use It — Management: “The deficiency has been corrected, and we're implementing corrective action to prevent recurrence across the remaining installations.”

HOLD POINT

A required stopping point in the work where inspection, verification, approval, or another condition must be satisfied before work continues.

Across the Table: A hold point protects work that may become difficult or impossible to inspect after the next step. Continuing past one without the required release can create rework or acceptance problems.

Use It — Field: “Don't close that up yet. It has to be inspected first.”

Use It — Management: “We've reached the inspection hold point and will not proceed until the required verification is complete.”

REMOBILIZATION

Returning people, equipment, or other resources to a location after they were previously removed or released.

Across the Table: Leaving a site before prerequisites, corrections, or remaining work are truly complete can turn a small unfinished item into another mobilization cost.

Use It — Field: “If we leave without finishing this, we're going to have to bring everybody back.”

Use It — Management: “If the outstanding work isn't resolved before demobilization, we'll incur additional remobilization cost.”

STAGING

Positioning materials, tools, equipment, or resources where they will be needed before the work begins.

Across the Table: Staging can look like housekeeping from a distance, but good staging reduces waiting, unnecessary movement, handling, and lost production.

Use It — Field: “Get tomorrow's material staged before we leave today.”

Use It — Management: “We're staging tomorrow's material in advance to reduce startup time and protect crew productivity.”

STOP WORK

Stopping an activity because continuing would create an unacceptable safety, quality, technical, or operational risk.

Across the Table: Stopping work isn't automatically a failure of production. Sometimes stopping is the decision that protects the project from a much larger consequence.

Use It — Field: “Stop. Something isn't right here, and we're not continuing until we understand it.”
