Glossary

The language changes as we move through construction leadership. The work doesn't always change as much as the words we use to describe it. A foreman may already be assessing risk, managing constraints, allocating resources, and protecting the schedule without using those terms. At the same time, managers and executives can lose touch with the field language used by the people doing the work.

This glossary is meant to help bridge that gap—from the field to superintendent, project management, operations, and executive leadership, and back again.

Use this glossary as a development tool. Pick the area you want to strengthen. Choose one term, understand what it means, recognize where it already exists in your work, and deliberately use it in your communication until it becomes natural. Then pick another.

Experience teaches us what to see. Language helps us communicate what we see.

FIELD & CONSTRUCTION

Purpose: The language of actually building the work—field conditions, execution, workmanship, production, and terminology commonly heard on a jobsite.

Purpose: The language used to organize work, remove obstacles, deploy resources, maintain production, and keep crews moving efficiently.

SCHEDULING

Purpose: The language used to describe when work happens, how activities depend on one another, what controls completion, and whether the project is performing against the plan.

SAFETY & RISK

Purpose: The language used to identify uncertainty, understand consequences, make decisions, establish responses, and communicate problems before they become emergencies.

Purpose: The language used to control scope, cost, schedule, changes, procurement, responsibilities, documentation, and overall project performance.

Purpose: The language used to establish responsibility, make decisions, develop people, assign work, measure performance, and run an operation.
